What's the difference between skin tone and undertone?

There is one simple difference between skin tone and undertone. Your skin tone changes throughout the year and throughout your life, whereas your undertone never changes.

Skin tone refers to the surface skin colour, determined by the amount of melanin found in the upper layer of your skin. So things typically describe like light, fair, medium, tanned, dark. Stand out in the sun too long and your skin tone changes! Your undertone on the other hand never changes, it is the natural hue underneath the skin. Your undertone will be either warm, cool, or neutral. Doesn't matter if you're using your summer or winter foundation, the undertone of both will be exactly the same.

What are the different undertones?

Now that you know the difference, it's time to work out what your undertone is! After these four steps you will be an undertone master!

  1. Are the veins on the inside of your wrist blue or purple? Then your skin has a cool undertone. Do they tend to be greener? Then your skin has a warm undertone/ Is it hard to tell the colour? Then your skin has a neutral undertone.
  2. Does gold or silver look better on you? Keep both solver and gold jewellery close to your face. Does gold look better? Then the skin has a warm undertone. With a cool undertone, silver will look better. If both look as great as each other then your undertone is neutral.
  3. Wrap a white scarf around the neck. Stand in front of a mirror in daylight. If the skin appears yellow, it has a warm undertone. If there is more pink in the skin, this indicates a cool undertone. If it is still hard to tell, then the undertone is neutral.
  4. Skin with a warm undertone will tan quickly on a sunny day. With a cool undertone, the skin tends to burn quickly.
