There is a difference between skin tone and undertone. Below you will learn all the tips and tricks to discover your undertone.

What's the difference between skin tone and undertone?

There is one simple difference between skin tone and undertone. Your skin tone changes throughout the year and throughout your life, whereas your undertone never changes.

Skin tone refers to the surface skin colour, determined by the amount of melanin found in the upper layer of your skin. So things typically describe like light, fair, medium, tanned, dark. Stand out in the sun too long and your skin tone changes! Your undertone on the other hand never changes, it is the natural hue underneath the skin. Your undertone will be either warm, cool, or neutral. Doesn't matter if you're using your summer or winter foundation, the undertone of both will be exactly the same.

What are the different undertones?

Throughout the website you will find products labeled with Cool, Neutral, and Warm undertone tags. Before you can go ahead and purchase everything you need for your flawless look, you need to know all about the differences. So what's the difference? Check out all you need to know in the key below:

With a cool undertone, the skin has a pink hue. There is a lot less melanin present in the skin, which means that tanning hardly happens. Signs of the cold undertone are traces of redness, easy flushing and freckles.

Colours like silver and ice blue look especially beautiful on cool undertones

With a neutral undertone, it is not clear whether the skin has. a cool or warm undertone.

With this undertone you are the lucky one: both warm and cool colours let you shine!

With a warm undertone, the skin has a yellow hue. People with a warm undertone have a lot of melanin in their skin. Often these are also people with brown or blue/green eyes in combination with warm blond, chestnut brown or black hair.

Earthy golden tones look amazing on warm undertones.

Now that you know the difference, it's time to work out what your undertone is! After these four steps you will be an undertone master!

  1. Are the veins on the inside of your wrist blue or purple? Then your skin has a cool undertone. Do they tend to be greener? Then your skin has a warm undertone/ Is it hard to tell the colour? Then your skin has a neutral undertone.
  2. Does gold or silver look better on you? Keep both solver and gold jewellery close to your face. Does gold look better? Then the skin has a warm undertone. With a cool undertone, silver will look better. If both look as great as each other then your undertone is neutral.
  3. Wrap a white scarf around the neck. Stand in front of a mirror in daylight. If the skin appears yellow, it has a warm undertone. If there is more pink in the skin, this indicates a cool undertone. If it is still hard to tell, then the undertone is neutral.
  4. Skin with a warm undertone will tan quickly on a sunny day. With a cool undertone, the skin tends to burn quickly.
